Alexandra
Associate Consultant
I started with OC&C in fall 2007 after graduating from UPenn. I wanted a job where I could apply my interest in the industry, but I also wanted an intellectually rigorous environment in which to acquire a broader spectrum of skills and knowledge.
I was extremely impressed with OC&C’s retail experience as well as its considerable international presence. In fact, I worked for four months out of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which was very exciting for me. Living and working in the UAE taught me so much about business in a newly- booming economy and the myriad cultures that make up the city.
If you’ve been looking into consulting, I’m sure you know that your day-to-day schedule varies so much! That said, a lot of what an AC is responsible for consists of industry research.
Everyone I work closely with has an interesting story to tell – ex-professional athletes, recorded rock musicians, authors, Guitar Hero addicts. Such a diversity of perspectives contributes to the quality of our work and makes the workday something to look forward to.

I graduated from the HEC School of Management in Paris, where I majored in marketing. Then I joined OC&C France in 2002 after a 4-month internship.
After 5 years in the Paris office, OC&C offered me the opportunity to join the New York office for 2 years. It has been an exciting challenge, as well as a great honor, to be able to help develop business in the U.S. where our presence is growing, and to share knowledge with new colleagues.
Well, in the crowded strategy consulting industry, I feel OC&C is all about the right size. Small enough so you can get significant responsibility from Day 1, build close client relationships, and have a true impact on the firm’s development. At the same time, OC&C is already well-established – you get involved with top-level strategy projects, benefit from excellent support, and can pursue a truly international career.

I chose strategy consulting for many reasons. I wanted to build a well-rounded business skill set, to work in teams, to meet and interact with very smart people, to make an impact,... I liked the idea of seeing a project evolve from start to finish. Most of all, I wanted to learn a lot about business and learn it fast. My experience at OC&C so far has encompassed all these things and more.
One of the best things about a consulting experience is that you get the opportunity to try out various things. Your days are never the same as an Associate Consultant and the variety of activities keeps your work challenging and exciting.
The best thing about OC&C is its people. On a daily basis, I get to interact with and learn from people who are intelligent and hard-working, yet also friendly and interesting.

As an econ major, I knew that I wanted a job that was related to the business. I was also looking for a job that would provide me a good work-life balance whilst teaching me a base set of skills and knowledge that would be useful in any area in which I might work in the future. Consulting was the obvious choice to fulfill all of my prerequisites.
The work I do changes from day to day. Consulting work as an Associate can range greatly and the subject matter changes from case to case as well, so every day presents new challenges.
What differentiated OC&C for me when I was choosing where to work was the personable nature of everyone I met from the firm. I felt as though they were people that I would like to hang out with outside of the office.

I had experience in several areas before joining OC&C, including consulting, entrepreneurial ventures and the automotive industry.
OC&C's unique appeal is that it is a both a global firm with presence in nearly every major economy in the world while at the same time being an entrepreneurial, fast-growing organization. All young professionals should try to gain international experience at some point and I’m very glad that we’re able to offer excellent opportunities to do that.
At OC&C, no matter what the title or the level, from Partner to Associate Consultant everyone is intensely involved in getting to the right answer and developing the best recommendations for our clients. This is one of the things that really drives the culture of the firm, something that makes it such a valuable place for young professionals to learn and gain experience.
Whether you decide to stay with OC&C or pursue other options, you will take with you the ability to make a significant impact.

I started my career in consulting after completing my bachelors degree at the University of Pennsylvania. I took a slight detour and left consulting to pursue a product and business development role at a then-startup called Harmonix Music Systems, the creators of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games.
I was drawn to OC&C because the U.S. group had a startup feel, a strong team, and a compelling vision. I have stayed with OC&C for more than five years as we have successfully grown the firm because the talent and character of the people and the overall firm culture are second to none.
The associate partner role can be extremely diverse in its responsibilities. Success means learning how to delegate, motivate, and evaluate the efforts of the talented associates and consultants that OC&C hires - The upside is that you spend more time focused on your clients, understanding their concerns, interpreting their feedback, and growing into the role of trusted advisor.
In my view, consulting is most rewarding when I achieve that level of interaction with my clients and share in their professional success.

Associate Consultant
I studied Chemical Engineering, with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering, at the University of California, Los Angeles. I then attended Columbia University for my Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. After graduating, I worked as a full-time intern at a financial research company, before joining OC&C as an Associate Consultant.
As an associate consultant, much of my time is spent conducting research and performing analysis. One of the most interesting projects I’ve worked on was a retail strategy project for a US museum. We worked closely with the merchandising team to help determine a full strategy on re-vamping their current retail structure. After two months of scrutinizing their retail channel structure and store performance, we produced a detailed roadmap of recommendations – and I have been fortunate enough to witness the implementation of a number of them!
Working at OC&C has been really enjoyable, mostly because there is a very collegial feel within the company. Everyone is vibrant, engaging and relaxed. At the same time, the high caliber of employees provides for a dynamic yet challenging environment. Each of my colleagues represents a potential wealth of information, and the international culture of OC&C in the heart of New York City provides the best of both worlds.

Having worked at large and small firms in the past, I joined OC&C in the US as it has the best of both worlds: an international firm with an established presence, combined with an exciting, young and dynamic entrepreneurial environment. As part of the OC&C team in the US, which is a relatively new market for the firm, I am able to have significant impact on shaping client recommendations as well as on contributing to matters of firm development.
One of my favourite things about OC&C is that every day can be completely different, bringing variety and a unique set of challenges. On any given day, I could be visiting stores or speaking with customers to better understand the merchandising strategy of a particular retailer whilst on another I could be presenting the benefits of an acquisition to the board of directors of a major industrial client.
One of OC&C’s greatest draws is its international nature. We frequently work with our colleagues overseas, as many of our projects involve high-level strategy issues covering multiple international geographies. Having offices around the world is a huge advantage for developing an understanding of local markets, for sharing knowledge and working practices and for meeting new people across the firm. And of course there is the ambassador program where you can transfer to one of our global offices for 6-9 months.

I received an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, which is where I first heard of OC&C and met its US consultants. There were many factors which led to my joining OC&C, but three stood out in particular.
First, OC&C is in a very unique situation in the US – a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment with the resources of the more established international offices. Second, the company offers unmatched opportunity for professional development through its non-hierarchical structure and extensive training programs.
Lastly, the people are the highest-caliber strategy consultants, yet they maintain a very open and collaborative culture. One amazing aspect of OC&C is it’s international focus. Every project I have been involved with has had an international component to it - The facility and frequency of working with international clients and teams really differentiates OC&C.

I studied at Caltech, where I received a PhD in Applied Mathematics and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. After a series of tenures at strategy consulting firms, I founded my own consultancy servicing a number of industry-leading clients in the US, across a range of strategy and operational issues. In 2004, I became one of the founding partners for the US office of OC&C.
Strategy consulting offers a rare opportunity to get under the hood of companies across a broad range of industries. I believe it’s simply the most challenging and rewarding career opportunity in the market. Always intellectually exhilarating, and occasionally a bit exhausting.
I play very active roles in all my client case work and am deeply involved in the development and administration of the US firm. I spend the majority of my time in client-facing situations and try to spend as much time as possible with project teams. It is not unusual to find me in NY, Paris, SF, and DC all in the same week.
The most exciting thing about working at OC&C is the exacting standards for intellectual excellence that exist in this firm. My colleagues are simply the smartest, and most engaging people I know.

After my studies at Columbia Business School, I joined the strategy practice of Adjoined Consulting (now part of Capgemini), where I worked as a Principal Consultant. Prior to my 2 years at Columbia, I was the financial controller for the Professional Bowlers Association in Seattle, WA.
My days can be drastically different. Each day is usually a balance between client work and firm building activities, and the variety from day-to-day always keeps things interesting.
This is my third year at OC&C. I enjoy the fact that my job always changes. From project to project there is always something new to learn, something interesting to try – that keeps me excited about getting up and coming into work each morning.
